Evaluating AI risks is a crucial and complex task, yet policymakers lack tools to effectively investigate potential harms and biases within AI systems. In response, Stanford’s Institute for Human-Centered AI and Cyber Policy Center have launched an AI Audit Challenge that calls for solutions, tools, datasets, or models that enable effective audits of AI systems. The Challenge grew out of an SRI Solutions Workshop on AI governance held in partnership with the Rockefeller Foundation in 2021.

Four new faculty fellowships and fifteen new graduate fellowships have been awarded by the Schwartz Reisman Institute to outstanding researchers from the University of Toronto. SRI fellowships are awarded to support interdisciplinary research that develop new lines of inquiry and innovative solutions to ensure that advanced technologies will benefit society.

The Schwartz Reisman Institute for Technology and Society joins the Partnership on AI (PAI), an international network of leading organizations bringing together diverse voices to develop tools and resources to support the use of AI for social good. Are you a scholar with a PhD in a computational discipline? The Schwartz Reisman Institute is hiring a new postdoctoral fellow to engage in a research program headed by Gillian Hadfield that will explore the phenomenon of human normativity and group coordination.

This year’s Absolutely Interdisciplinary conference will forge new connections between researchers studying normativity in human and machine contexts, bringing academic disciplines together to develop novel approaches towards ensuring technology is aligned with human values. The conference runs from June 16-18, 2021.

Hailing from a wide variety of disciplines, our graduate fellows represent the best and brightest U of T student researchers working on topics at the intersection of technology and society. The fellows will serve a one-year term at the Schwartz Reisman Institute.

Launched in 2014, the 100-Year Study on Artificial Intelligence (AI100) convenes leading thinkers from across a wide spectrum of fields to examine how the effects of AI will ripple through every aspect of how people work, live, and play. The initiative’s new report is out now, and features contributions from SRI Director Gillian Hadfield and SRI Associate Director Sheila McIlraith.
