Schwartz Reisman Institute joins the Partnership on AI network
The Partnership on AI (PAI) is a non-profit partnership of academic, civil society, industry, and media organizations whose mission is to bring together diverse voices across global sectors, disciplines, and demographics to advance positive societal outcomes for the use of AI. PAI develops tools and resources through the support of its partner organizations to share insights on the use of AI that can be translated into actionable guidance, including best practices for adoption and public policy.
In May 2022, the Schwartz Reisman Institute for Technology and Society (SRI) joined the PAI network, alongside five other nonprofit organizations: AI and Faith, the Associated Press, Hacks/Hackers, Montreal AI Ethics Institute, and the Starling Lab for Data Integrity. The inclusion of these six new partners expands PAI’s global reach to over 100 organizations across five continents.
“I am very happy to welcome the Schwartz Reisman Institute as a PAI partner. SRI is pioneering new ways of conducting multidisciplinary research to advance tech and policy in positive ways,” said Rebecca Finlay, CEO at Partnership on AI. “I’m excited to see what we can do together in our shared goal of ensuring that technology centers people first.”
“The Schwartz Reisman Institute’s partnership with PAI is born out of a similar mission,” observes SRI Director and Chair Gillian Hadfield. “Together, we are uniting diverse voices so that developments in powerful technologies like AI advance positive outcomes for people and society. Through SRI’s mission we hope to inspire, and draw inspiration from, all the work PAI is doing under their programs.”
The Partnership on AI’s ongoing research and advocacy is focused on five key programs:
inclusive research and design;
AI and media integrity;
labour and the economy;
fairness and transparency;
safety-critical AI.
These programs reflect six key thematic pillars that guide PAI’s work, which represent significant issues that encompass the greatest risks and opportunities for AI: safety-critical AI; fair, transparent, and accountable AI; AI, labour, and the economy; collaborations between people and AI systems; social and societal influences of AI; and AI and social good.
Throughout these key issues, PAI seeks to ensure that technology benefits and empowers as many people as possible, through an emphasis on education and public engagement, open research and dialogue, engagement with a broad range of stakeholders, and a culture of cooperation, trust, and openness.
