SRI Seminar Series: David G. Rand, “How polarization can help solve the misinformation problem”

Our weekly SRI Seminar Series welcomes David G. Rand, the Erwin H. Schell Professor and professor of management science and brain and cognitive sciences at MIT, the director of the Applied Cooperation Team, and an affiliate of the MIT Institute of Data, Systems, and Society, and the Initiative on the Digital Economy. Bridging the fields of cognitive science, behavioural economics, and social psychology, Rand’s research helps to illuminate why people believe and share misinformation, better understand political psychology and polarization, and promote cooperation.

In this session, Rand explores the role of political polarization in the sharing and belief of misinformation, suggesting that it is possible to supplement forms of professional fact-checking by harnessing the wisdom of crowds. Presenting data from survey experiments, Rand will demonstrate that successful crowdsourcing of misinformation identification may succeed because of, rather than in spite of, polarization and political motivations.

Abstract:

When discussing the ills afflicting social media, there is a great deal of concern about the role played by polarization. Among other negative consequences, dislike of counter-partisans—and political motivations more generally—have been suggested to promote belief in, and sharing of, misinformation. While polarization may be part of the misinformation problem, here I will argue that political motivations are also essential for one of the only possibilities for identifying and combatting misinformation at scale—the wisdom of crowds. While professional fact-checkers play a critical role in countering misinformation, they are relatively few in number, and cannot possibly keep up with the vast amount of content posted on social media every day. Recent work has suggested that it is possible to supplement professional fact-checking by harnessing the wisdom of crowds: the ratings of fairly small politically-balanced groups of laypeople can generate high levels of agreement with professional fact-checkers. A central challenge for conducting crowd-based evaluations at scale, however, is the problem of encouraging participation—why should people bother to flag misleading content?

In this talk, I argue that not wanting people to be exposed to posts by counter-partisans helps to solve this participation problem by motivating people to flag. Although extreme partisans would flag all counter-partisan content as misleading regardless of its actual truth value, such extreme partisans are rare. A much larger group of people care somewhat about both truth and partisanship, such that they would only be sufficiently motivated to flag when content is both misleading and counter-partisan. For these people, the partisan motivation is needed to drive participation—without any partisan motive they would flag nothing. To support this account, I present a simple model and data from survey experiments and Twitter's crowdsourced fact-checking program. Consistent with the theoretical predictions, the results demonstrate that: (i) misleading counter-partisan content is flagged more than misleading co-partisan content, (ii) non-misleading content is rarely flagged, and (iii) more politically polarized users, rather than undermining the system, produce more and/or better flags. Thus, crowdsourced misinformation identification may succeed because of, rather than in spite of, polarization and political motivations.

David G. Rand is the Erwin H. Schell Professor and professor of management science and brain and cognitive sciences at MIT, the director of the Applied Cooperation Team, and an affiliate of the MIT Institute of Data, Systems, and Society, and the Initiative on the Digital Economy.

Bridging the fields of cognitive science, behavioral economics, and social psychology, Rand’s research combines behavioral experiments run online and in the field with mathematical and computational models to understand people’s attitudes, beliefs, and choices. His work uses a cognitive science perspective grounded in the tension between more intuitive versus deliberative modes of decision-making. He focuses on illuminating why people believe and share misinformation and “fake news,” understanding political psychology and polarization, and promoting human cooperation. Rand received his BA in computational biology from Cornell University in 2004 and his PhD in systems biology from Harvard University in 2009, was a post-doctoral researcher in Harvard University’s Department of Psychology from 2009 to 2013, and was an assistant and then associate professor (with tenure) of Psychology, Economics, and Management at Yale University prior to joining the faculty at MIT.

Rand’s work has been published in peer-reviewed journals such Nature, Science, Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, the American Economic Review, Psychological Science, Management Science, New England Journal of Medicine, and the American Journal of Political Science, and has received widespread attention from print, radio, TV, and social media outlets. He has also written popular press articles for outlets including the New York Times, Wired, New Scientist, and the Psychological Observer. He was named to Wired magazine’s Smart List 2012 of “50 people who will change the world,” chosen as a 2012 Pop!Tech Science Fellow, and awarded the 2015 Arthur Greer Memorial Prize for Outstanding Scholarly Research, fact-checking researcher of the year in 2017 by the Poyner Institute’s International Fact-Checking Network, and the 2020 FABBS Early Career Impact Award from the Society for Judgment and Decision Making. Papers he has coauthored have been awarded Best Paper of the Year in Experimental Economics, Social Cognition, and Political Methodology.
